Urban informality has been part and parcel of the manner in which our world is urbanizing. Although there are many works that try to understand economic and spatial aspects, the socio-cultural aspects of informality has remained understudied. Such an understanding will help geographers, urban planners, and policy-makers to intervene in complex urban contexts via development work.
Our project has been investigating settlements in Bamiyan and Herat (Afghanistan) instrumentalizing a multidisciplinary approach using mixed methods. We analyse living conditions, mobility, aspirations, and material realities at neighbourhood scale to investigate socio-cultural aspects of informality. We intend to use our results for both informing theory, as well as to support action for territorial governance policies prepared by the Local Authorities.
